Borrowed Wings

Hand-Printed Edition

There’s nothing more delicate and intricate than a feather. And capturing these details in a monotype, printing directly from the feather itself is especially challenging. I must have printed hundreds before finding the perfect balance of light and dark which would be ideal for screen print reproduction.

This feather has a story though. I didn’t find it. It found me. On one of my trips to the meadow, I was collecting botanicals and while sorting through them back at the studio, I noticed that one of the goldenrod bouquets I collected had a feather attached. Of course, I had to print it. And of all the feathers I’d experimented with monotyping, this one was perfect.

Eight 20×24 inch limited edition prints were produced in two variations. One with Gold Leaf, another With Silver Leaf because I couldn’t decide which I would prefer. And I’m glad I did, because when I hold them up side-by-side today, I still can’t decide which I love more.

About this series

For over two years, I collected natural elements—leaves, flowers, feathers, even dragonfly wings—to create and capture direct monotype impressions. Each print captures not just the image but the very texture of these organic forms, yielding a depth that even photography cannot match. Yet, the beauty of these monotype prints was often too small to be fully appreciated or even seen with the naked eye.

Details of the Meadow is my solution—an expansion of these delicate, intricate prints into large-scale works that celebrate their depth, complexity, and inherent beauty. By using screen printing as a tool for reinterpretation, I bridge the fine details of nature with the expressive qualities of printmaking, ensuring that every nuance is seen, felt, and experienced.
