BLOG: Old School Printing Stuff

I went browsing through a local antique shop today and found an old copper plate engraving from the 1940s or 1950s. These are the metal, engraved and etched plates that were used for printing way back in the day.

What’s really unique about this piece, it that it is a piece of old school printing history that also illustrates the printing process from concept to production! I scanned it into Photoshop and reversed the image…

Thanks to my friend and fellow printmaking enthusiast Michael Martino at Blue Fig Editions, who spent the better part of an afternoon tweaking and printing on his etching and litho presses, we have a beautiful print from this plate.

Mike teaches printmaking of all types, has a wonderful facility and the patience of Job when it comes to getting it just right. He also makes killer homemade wine. Thanks again, Mike for the hospitality.
