Damask is a floral-inspired variegated pattern with origins in the Middle East. In the middle ages, fine fabrics woven with these elaborate and delicate designs were highly sought after in Europe and came to embody the epitome of beauty, elegance and sophistication.
Working from a black and white photograph, I separated the various tones into color separations and edited each by hand to include textured effects by scraping and stippling with pen and ink. These 4 separations were printed in matte-finish inks onto dark grey, handmade paper made from black streamers leftover from the model’s birthday party. Finally, a damask pattern was printed over the entire piece with a clear, gloss ink with a tiny bit of iridescent pearl mixed in. Unfortunately, the photos do not do this piece its due justice.
